AC and DC components of a voltage

    A voltage waveform need not be pure AC or DC. Any average voltage means a DC component and any variation in voltage means an AC component. We will demonstrate this by separating the AC and DC components of a squarewave swinging from 0 to 5 volts, by passing it though a capacitor. The experimental setup and the results are shown in the figures below. The DC component is stopped by the capacitor.
